The Master

Synopsis: Phoenix plays an American navy officer who returns home from war and struggles to settle into civilian life.   He falls in with a group called The Cause, run by fruit-loop Philip S. H. and his young wife, played by Amy Adams. Can you tell I didn’t remember any of the characters’ names?

Yeah, I don't know, either.

Yeah, I don’t know, either.

What can I say?  Bit of a snore, this one.  Although it looked good, and I was aware there had been a  fair amount of award-hype, it didn’t really hold my attention.  I like Hoffman and Phoenix but in spite of the performance (aren’t they both always really good?) I couldn’t help feeling that this film was less than the sum of it’s parts, it was somehow lacking.  There were a few choice scenes though, e.g. when we see Phoenix completely lose his shit while working as a department store photographer, or when he is doing one of Hoffman’s exercises, or when we first see Hoffman reeling him in.

Final thoughts: watch this if you must, it isn’t the worst film ever made, but you’re better of watching Doubt or Walk the Line.

Score: 5/10
