The dark and atmospheric original House on Haunted Hill stars a delightfully creepy Vincent Price as the eccentric millionaire who rents a haunted house for the night, with a view to holding a party for his wife. No ordinary party, he invites five strangers instead of friends and family, offering each $10,000 if they have the guts to stay the whole night. Rich people, eh?
This is more than a run-of-the-ill haunted house film; it has a fun and clever story with themes of betrayal, mistrust and bitterness. Vincent Price, of course, steals the show whenever he’s on screen.
Score: 7/10
Oh, and don’t make the mistake of opting for the inferior, and quite frankly dreadful, 1999 remake. It has none of the brains or charm of the original, and bares very little resemblance to it save for the title and the haunted-house-party premise.
