Coherence

Ages ago our good friend Eric came over here and was all like ‘hey, you have to watch Coherence, it’s really great and I think you’ll like it’ or some such.  Being the dutiful Filmnerd that I am, I promptly added it to my Lovefilm reservation list (it wasn’t available in the UK yet) and patiently waited.  And waited.  And waited.

I was very pleased when it finally arrived.  Eric’s taste in films is pretty similar to mine and I think we’re both quite good at guessing when something one of us likes won’t be the other’s cup of tea.  In short, Eric’s glowing recommendation was enough to have me just a little bit excited about this one.

I’m very happy to report that I LOVED IT!

I hope Eric won’t my if I just lift his plot summary straight from the comments on his post (I couldn’t explain it better)…  “8 people are at a dinner party when a comet passes over and alternate realities collide”.  That’s it, in a nutshell.  And I don’t really want to give anything away about what transpires thereafter.  I want you to see it for yourself and enjoy it the way I did – without prior knowledge of what would happen.

When it started I thought it was a bit slow and, for a minute, wondered what the hell had happened to Eric that would make him like a film about a group of people AT A DINNER PARTY.  Or more precisely, a group of people AT A DINNER PARTY sitting around TALKING and TALKING and TALKING.  But things soon get good.  Really good.

Coherence is an intelligent and original low-budget, sci-fi mind-bender that had me scratching my head.  I found it really refreshing to see a film that doesn’t talk down to its audience, but instead trusts that they’ll engage their brains, pay attention and go along for the ride.

You should definitely watch this film.

Also, it has Xander from Buffy which was a cool blast from the past – I used to love that show.

Score: 9/10

    • Wow, thanks Lauren, that’s so kind! I’ve been really rubbish and undisciplined lately so I’m not sure if I’ll get round to paying it forward but thanks very much.

As for Coherence – yes please see this one, it’s very good and I want someone to talk about it with (as well as Eric).
